Family Workshops: Sound Creature Observation with Julia Tsai
workshop • 27 Feb 2021 3:30pm–5:30pmLet's visit and explore an imaginary world together. A world with fantastical creatures, who only appear when people share their presence together digitally.
The Sound Creature Observation Tour is a journey into a mystical world led by artist Julia Tsai. Participants will be asked to draw, describe, and make noises for creatures from their imagination.
The aim of this workshop is to create connections between participants by subverting the setting of zoom meeting into a space for silliness and play. In the session we will be stretching our imagination through drawing and vocal exercises to bring our characters to life and collectively build an alternative world.
This workshop will be limited to 8 places. If you want to take part but don’t have access to a laptop and/or headphones please get in touch and we can provide these for the duration of the project. This workshop is aimed at audiences aged 10+. Intergenerational collaboration between your household is encouraged.
About the Artist
Julia Tsai is a Chicago-based artist whose practice explores the human qualities we are sometimes too shy to share out loud, such as silliness, cuteness, and empathy. She seeks to build relationships and create intimacy by guiding people to interact freely with her work in a public or virtual setting. She has experimented previously with installation, drawings, animal sculpture and participatory sound works, which can be found at ahungrybadger.com.
This session was programmed by the Society of Explorers (Site Gallery’s collective of 14-18 year olds) from responses to our open call. The Explorer’s selected Julia based on her dedication to ‘making space for silliness’ and her experimental use of Zoom.
