About Phoebe
Phoebe Davies is a Welsh artist who works site specifically, often working long term with communities and locations. Davies work confronts gender norms and power dynamics, investigating how people perceive their social framework.
Her practice investigates people’s perceptions of their social framing, and she frequently uses collaboration, collective action and Do It Together strategies to make work with individuals, groups and communities. Often working in-depth within social contexts to deliver ambitious and experimental site-specific works, her practice encompasses video, performance, audio, print works and constructed social spaces, and each projects’ outcome responds directly to their contexts and communities.
Recent works include live soundscapes scored with fighters in boxing gyms, a print series exploring sexual consent co-authored with male rugby teams, a vinyl record made with elderly care home residents and house DJs, choreographed works with women over 50 exploring body autonomy, and a touring nail salon hosted by teenage girls programming feminist workshops and debates.
Davies work has been programmed nationally and internationally at galleries and public institutions including Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Serpentine Galleries, Arnolfini, Eastside Projects, Bergen Assembly, SA-UK Seasons Johannesburg, Kunstnernes Hus Oslo and Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. In 2015, she was awarded a British Council US Artist Fellowship in Art and Social Practice at Portland State University.
