We are seeking proposals for performances at a special edition of Crit-a-Oke at our Re-collections Crit-a-Oke Closing Party on 18 May 2019.
About Crit-a-Oke
Taking the format of Karaoke, Crit-a-Oke introduces art criticism, theory and academic texts to the mix. Highlighting the performative nature of critical writing, the format also provides a new entry point for audiences to a medium that can -at times- be indecipherable.
Participants will perform a piece of writing – spoken, sung or otherwise – to a backing track of an instrumental version of a relevant pop song.
In previous iterations of Crit-a-Oke, Jerry Saltz criticisms have performed to Justin Bieber’s ‘Sorry’ and Kylie Minogue’s ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ proved a fitting bed for Federici’s ‘Feminism and the Politics of Commons’, amongst other wild concoctions.
Crit-a-Oke is brought to you by Tžužjj – a curatorial project between Louis Palliser-Ames and James Harper.

Site Gallery celebrates its 40th birthday in 2019. We therefore ask applicants to consider the year 1979 when selecting their pairing. This is favourable but not compulsory.
Proposals must contain the title of a piece of writing and the piece of music that will accompany its performance. It would be the responsibility of the selected participants to obtain a copy of the text in digital format. An instrumental/karaoke version of the proposed music must also be available. A short statement of why the text and music have been chosen is desirable.
Selected participants must be available to travel to Site Gallery on Saturday 18 May for the whole day.
This opportunity is open to people from, living or working in the Sheffield City Region only.
A fee of £150 is offered to the selected participants. This fee is to cover all expenses.
Deadline: midnight on Monday 22nd April.
Applicants will be notified if they have been successful by Friday 26 April.
